Thank you Sivaji

Thank you Sivaji. Wow! You helped me discover the joys of blogging. Overwhelming the sheer number and minute details in all the comments reacting to my previous post - Sivaji. The Boss. Of Crap. I have waded through, at last count almost all the nine hundred and sixty-five comments, when actually I should have been working. But what to do, its addictive! Since its impossible to get back one on one, I am hoping this works for you, collectively.

1. The blog was not a FILM REVIEW it was a PERSONAL OPINION.

For those who don't know, a FILM REVIEW is a CRITIC's INFORMED (hopefully) opinion that helps you decide whether or not you should watch a film. I am pretty sure I didn't ask you to be either a pig or a lion. My post was existential angst in response to current socio-cultural-political events, which is what a blog is meant to be.

2.Not pro Hollywood & Hindi films and anti Tamil films

Many of you have implied and assumed - thought you guys could read because you sure can write :) - that I believe Hindi and Hollywood films are better. Let me disillusion you. I am happy to say that the majority of films from both those spaces are also CRAP. So stop falling back on idiotic, petty and frankly outdated `regional language' fault lines. And that, my dears is a pun.

3.Rajnikanth the actor not equal to Rajnikanth the person

Grow up. Learn to separate an artist's work from his/her private person. If I believe an actor's latest work is CRAP it doesn't stop me from choosing to believe that he/she is a great human being.

4.Sticks and stones will break my bones

Come on all of you who said I should shy away from visiting Chennai and other assorted places teeming with Sivaji fans - threatening bodyily harm - I didn't know goons and thugs were educated enough to be on the internet. Silly me I assumed if you were educated you wouldn't be a goon or a thug, atleast not the type who beats up people. Thought Bubble: Get real Anuradha, fascism doesn't exist only in Gujarat.

5.Sivaji's made money so it can't be bad

That's what many of you have said and that's such earth shatteringly self serving logic that I can't even react. I can only wish people who believe that everything that makes money is good, all the best.

6.Being upfront about not knowing Tamil

Come on I needn't have told you that I don't speak or understand Tamil beyond Inge va, Teri yada and Teri Yum (ironically I learned the last two phrases watching Rajni's Thalapathi which was much better that Sivaji), Chaddi Pota Ko and Po. But do you honestly believe that I needed to have an M.A. in Tamil to follow Sivaji" You are kidding right"

7. Congratulations

If you guys feel so strongly about something you have loads of energy and passion. Want to see what you can achieve if you use it more constructively"

8. CNN IBN not equal to Anuradha SenGupta

All those annoyed with CNN IBN or ibnlive should understand that blogs allow professionals working with, ahem, the aforementioned parties, a chance to express their INDIVIDUAL, PERSONAL thoughts. So be mad at me, but leave the channel and site alone. Easy I would say?

9. And the prize goes to:

Someone who said I maybe a pig but I have balls. Thank you.

I am a Tamilian and also a fan of Rajni as an actor. But this film was a crap - as it portrays a macho Sivaji doing super human stunts and a "Beauty without brains" Tamilselvi character. I think women should protest against films projecting women as pure objects of beauty/fancy without any wits.

Dear Ms Anuradha,
Sorry i came to your personal blog to jus share a small view point. Nothing on your review of Sivaji,UR entitled to your opinion.
But my viewpoint is that Human beings as a collective comprise of brilliant and not so brilliant and average. It requires a Not so brilliant to make somebody brilliant.you are above many others in life because of your brilliance or lack of it in others. So my request is that we should not run down anybody in life and have mutual respect for everybody for whatever he/she is.
Thas my only humble request to you...Sridhar Thiagarajan, bangalore

@ Anonymous...hey dude's i dont know who you people are but still i share your views that most of the movies made in india are typical and crap, sivaji may look like a crap for people who are used to movies like City of God, Paradise now, Children of heaven etc i love watching these kind of movies the movies which belong to the genre of best of world cinema. what i am trying to say is If some people find it hard to understand the phenomenon called Rajnikanth they should atleast refrain themselves from what they term it to be an insensibility rather than posting blogs which cries for peoples attention to eulogies their sensibilities. This act of theirs crying for attention in the first place is an act of insensibility.

Srivaths & I said...

I believe that you should have stopped with your first blog on shivaji the crap, than defending your intention as a damage control activity..

"Rajnikanth" what is it, is that a name of a person, if yes who is he?. Now if I ask that question to somebody and if I said to him that I am an Tamilian I would be considered by him as an alien from mars or Jupiter even if he doesn't patronize the person who carries that name and I am sure millions of others who patronize that person more than what the word patronize means will consider me as some dumb head who is out of his mind and seriously needs an assistance of a lunatic asylum. "Super Star Rajnikanth" the name itself is enough to elicit the charismatic picture of a person, trying to wear a pair of glasses in his own branded way of style in the minds of all the tamilians around the world, he has been a phenomenon in the Tamil film industry. Now things have grown big with respect to Tamil film industry and so has the things about this actor. Now he is considered to be the highly paid actor in Asia next to Jackie Chan, now that is really big considering the fact that when the world talks about Indian film industry its only referring to films from Bollywood. The efforts of many great actors like Kamal Hasan to take Indian cinema to the world is commendable and is quiet worth mentioning but this man known only for his striking gimmicks and movies that never cross the boundaries of the genre called entertainers has for sure given an identity to the Tamil films by marking a dot in the map of world cinema. It would be a mistake to compare this Badshaa of box office with any other Indian actor, he has his own fan following who like him the way he is, in a world were glitz and glamour should be a part and parcel of any person who chooses to live in that world, this man has chosen to be real in the real life(posing for photographs with bald head, unkempt beard etc..), some find it idiotic about the way he looks and wonder how this person could be some one who has won the adorations of millions of fans around the world, what ever might be the reasons, at the end of the day an ordinary auto driver who goes for a movie after a days of hectic driving would want to come out of the movie hall with a satisfied smile on his face and Super Star movies have for sure stood up to those expectations and will continue to do so in future.

Sigh! Before i begin my rant, my disclaimers..

1. I am educated and literate, and know the difference between good literature and utter drivel
2. I am not a tamil fanatic, nor do I intend to cause any harm

Anuradha,

If you make a mistake once, it is forgiven. If you make it more than once then I think you deserve all the brickbats that you are getting and then some more.

While we all respect your right to personal opinion and so forth, it is your duty to respect others sentiments. I think that is the first thing they teach you at journalist school right?( I am assuming you went to one! and If you did I pity the school).

I read your original article, but refrained from commenting, assuming that you were a immature, egotistic and bigoted person who was a shame to the journalistic fraternity, but then you did not give up.

To sound parochial, if this were Bengal, you guys would have probably struck off work for a whole week now. We might not have Satyajit Ray's oscars, but neither do we have people who steal them.

Your critique sucked, because not only was it biased, but also derogatory. I am happy that this still has not gone to the Rajini fan clubs, for your sake.

The movie might be bad, but your language was worse, 'pig', 'crap' - I think this is more a reflection on your upbringing.

Yeah you might have balls( I like the way you chose the one amongst the thousand comments), but they are definitely in the wrong place.

I am a pig too, for you have dragged me into this.

To answer your questions one by one:

1)We agree that you did not review the film. may be you are not supposed to do also. but you have no rights to call all those who waych sivaji pigs. including yourself into that category doesn’t make it any less offensive.

2)It is not about the regional films thing. just one question on this. which is the film in any god forsaken language which generated this much hype.which was multiplied by all the news channel including CNN-IBN.

3)We are not only protecting Rajnikanth the person. We are out there to protect Rajnikanth the actor as well. For your kind information Rajnikant is a very good actor. If you want proofs for this I would suggest you watch some of the old movies by Rajnikant (for your kind information Rajnikant has also won national awars) and in Sivaji also he has done enough hard work at the age of 58 and the mere fact that the entire movie stands on his able shoulders shows his status.

4)If you can call all who watched Sivaji as pigs then you better watch out and protect yourself from these pigs.

5)Making money is not a bad thing for films and if you are of the belief that whichever movie is not making money is good then i am sorry you are in an absolute minority. The very logic behind pointing out that Sivaji made money was that it has reached so many people and so many people have liked it to watch it shelling out so much money from their pockets.

6)You can understand the story of the movie without knowing Tamil, agreed. But what about the dialoghes of the movie and the healthy comedy track of the movie. If you don’t know that dialoghes are the highlight of a Rajnikanth movie then I am sorry.you need to do some more homework before you see a next Rajnikant film.

7)Well at least now you appreciate things. Thanks. The same energy is being shown by Rajni and all those who were a part of Sivaji. Pls try to appreciate them as well.

8)Well we do agree and sincerely hope this is true.

9) Well... err.. no comments.

Pls try not to hurt the sentiments of an entire community in future.

People when you believe that what you are trying to say is true whether its digging at anuradha or the Movie sivaji why do you wear a veil of anonymity, it just shows your hypocrisy rather than the correctness in what you want to express, I am a fan of Mr.Rajnikanth and i Totally disagree with Ms. Anuradha and i have replied to all her posts. Let us give some respect to the human being on the other side who is going to read all your replies, she might be a person who has a view totally wrong about Sivaji that doesn't make her completely Bad, she might be a good Daughter or a sister or a friend of someone we don't know, we may not know how good as a person she is, so i would request all you people who wanna show your anger at Anuradha maintain some decorum !!!

Anuradha,
It's very simple as aptly pointed out by another reader: If you do not understand "Rajini - the phenomenon", there is no use talking to you people. Some users may not have been able to express themselves properly (like when they compared Rajni's personal life etc.), but we all have one thing in common. We all understand "Rajni - the phenomenon" and YOU DON'T...PERIOD. And yes, for someone who doesn't understand that, the movie is going to look like crap. On the other hand if you did understand, you would know why we are so mad and why you are so wrong in almost all your comments.

I wish I could point you to the article that an American had written after watching the movie - with no subtitles - and he didn't think the movie was that great either, but he understood "Rajni - the phenomenon" from seeing the reaction of the people who were watching the movie with him. Quite amazing that he could understand it and you still can't!!

Dear Ms.Sengupta
Sivaji doesnot represent the entire tamil cinema and I believe that tamil cinema is surely better than the Hindi cinema with the directors in kollywood far more better and experienced than Bollywood.

All this over a movie?

Some people made a movie. Lots of others went to watch it. Some liked it. Some didn't.

Where does stuff like respect, sentiment, feelings, character, emotion and what not fit into this?

Phew!

Sivaji's made money so it can't be bad: Anyone following Indian film industry will tell why box-office success is important.

In his time Manmohan Desai was the most successful Bollywood producer/director. Towards end of his life, Desai attempted to begin life anew, but plans were rudely aborted when an ailing Desai decided to put a full stop to his life. Desai could not digest the twin shocks of failure of his swansong Ganga Jamuna Saraswati and his son's directorial debacles.

Out of 20 films Desai directed, 13 were stupendous hits. His success ratio was 65% in industry where flops abound. For a spell of 9 years, success obeyed his command. In this phase he delivered only hits, most of them Amitabh-centred. The A-team delivered 6 straight super hits.

Desai's films have been and continue to be a wellspring of hope & happiness to multitudes. Amitabh recalls him as having emitted a lot of energy in his films and as a person.

Notable film Tamil film producer, distributor & financier G. Venkateswaran (GV) committed suicide due to financial problems. GV was the elder brother of director Manirathnam (Roja, Bombay, Guru). GV Films Limited was the first Indian film company to go public. GV, a qualified chartered accountant, made some bad financial decisions later on failure movies.

GV, who made nearly 18 movies, produced path-breaking Tamil box-office blockbusters like Mouna Raagam, Kamal Hassan’s Nayakan, Agni Nakshatram, Anjali and Rajinikanth's Dalapati. Of late Lady Luck abandoned him. His distributions, including Rajni’s Baba and Kamal’s Aalavandan, bombed at BO. While Rajni refunded his distributors, failure of Baba had the repercussion of dashing GV's hopes of bouncing back. GV's suicide highlighted the plight of Tamil film industry. Film after film had bombed at BO then, with a rare movie making it big. Astronomical star prices and piracy made survival difficult for filmmakers.

Of late GV Films stock is in limelight ever since it jointly acquired the Chennai rights for Rajni’s "Sivaji".

THIS IS THE OFFICIAL ANURADHA SENGUPTA hate club! Anybody who hates her can join this club.

Anuradha Sengupta is a journalist in CNN IBN. Nobody took notice of her. Nobody even cared whether she existed or not.

It was from the moment she started to TRASH-TALK about our “THALAIVAR” SUPERSTAR RAJNI and his latest movie SIVAJI in her blog, she became the one-stop spit-stop for all DIEHARD RAJNI FANS. This was her road to become famous.

If you still haven’t checked her article about Sivaji, plz chk it out.
1. This one started it all, the moment it was uploaded, in a matter of hours 4000+ thrashing comments landed in the website ibnlive.com
http://www.ibnlive.com/blogs/anuradhasengupta/164/2061/sivaji-the-boss-of-crap.html
She became scared to death after seeing the responses.

2. She made things worse, by commenting on the fans now. Again she was thrashed with terrible comments.
http://www.ibnlive.com/blogs/anuradhasengupta/164/2079/thank-you-sivaji.html

3. Later she was forced to apologise publicly in her own blog.
http://www.ibnlive.com/blogs/anuradhasengupta/164/2134/life-after-sivaji.html

RAJNI IMPACT!
She stopped writing in IBNLIVE, and opened her own blog in blogspot.
http://senguptaspeak.blogspot.com/

She also roped in her colleague Sanjeeb Mukherjea for her support, who failed miserably.
http://www.ibnlive.com/blogs/sanjeebmukherjea/262/2126/rajini-the-blogbuster.html

FINAL VERDICT:
ANURADHA SENGUPTA SUX AND SUX BIG TIME!

Anuradha,

You say your blog is existential angst in response to a “socio-cultural event”. It sounds strikingly similar to a British Author’s rebuke of Harry Potter books in a blog "Harry Potter And The Childish Adult”. She could understand children being attracted by the powerful fantasy and by stories that were "comfortable, funny, just frightening enough". "But why would grown-up men and women become obsessed by jokey latency fantasies? Comfort, I think, is part of the reason." She said childhood reading remained "potent" for most people because "we like to regress. It is the substitution of celebrity for heroism that has fed this phenomenon."

Drawing analogy to this phenomenon of adults’ tryst with Harry Potter, a columnist in “The Pioneer” writes: “This ‘comfort’ is perhaps what drives the Indian multitude to watch Sivaji again and again. There is no doubt that Rajini has an uncanny ability to give that rare experience to his fans. "Regress" perhaps explains why the Great Indian Nerds who people software parks all over the world flock to Sivaji. They all revert to their childhood, temporarily shedding their IQ. It must be a pleasurable experience.”

Ms. Sengupta
You have to understand the reason why viewers of tamil films or any other south indian films jumped to conclusions that your personal opinion of sivaji-the boss was termed anti-tamil films. In your blog you mentioned that you only saw few films of rajinikanth, but all them were in hindi. The only tamil film of his you saw is thalapathi. There were alot of films in earlier in his career that displayed his acting talents and he didn't do any of his stylish stunts in those days. Only in recent decade that he chose to don the action hero and even in those films he never overacted and his "stylish" stunts were only there for a few seconds in the entire movie. I thought sivaji was kind of overboard in his action skills than any of his previous films, even chandramukhi. Yet he portrayed the character to the full and audiences loved it according to each ones taste.
About not knowing tamil, you shoud know atleast the dialogues and that is important to understand the film. You don't need to see a tamil film to know the words as you mentioned, just pick up a tamil-english&vice-versa book and you can know these words which are abc's of tamil. You also mistook what some people said that you shud understand tamil to follow the movie. No one's asking you to receive an MA in tamil unless you want to master in the language or any other language. To follow sivaji, the dialogue was important to understand and there was a minor message about the movie and minority of the people know that this is based on a true story, but the movie was made according to the director&rajinikanth. Moreover,The "regional line" is not outdated. If you listen to what kerala actor mammooty said about IIFA and also what tamil director P.Vasu said in IFFI about separating "bollywood" and regional films, you will know that regional films are not still being called indian cinema. Even though I beleive that there is no such thing as regional cinema.
